Elton John once warned all wannabe Rocket Men (and women!) that “Mars ain’t the kinda place to raise your kids. In fact, it’s cold as hell.” That caveat is not deterring a building movement to send manned space flights to the Red Planet.
For one, NASA has vowed to send people to Mars by 2030.
There’s the controversial Mars One group, who some claim is ripping off aspiring astronauts by collecting money from them for a trip that will never happen. The group denies those claims.
Fans of CBS-TV’s Big Bang Theory learned last week that Sheldon (Jim Parsons) has applied to go to Mars. He even created an audition video:
Then there’s Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second human to set foot on the moon. He’s also the inspiration for MTV’s “Moonman” statue given to VMA winners.
Aldrin cemented his place as an American hero when he punched a moon landing conspiracy theorist who accosted him and accused him of being a thief and a liar.
Now Aldrin is urging folks to go to Mars using the hashtag #gyatm.
While at @EH_Stonehenge yesterday I decided to send a message to the cosmos. #GYATM (Photo by James O.Davies) http://t.co/ra5Y2OsSPB
