There was a time when the opening of a new Cameron Crowe film was a must-attend moment, especially for movie-watchers who are the kind of people who love to fall in love. Crowe’s films were instant classics for his excellent screenplays, wonderful use of music and brilliant casting. Many have been nominated for Oscars, Golden Globes and Director’s Guild of America awards.
While assembling our list of the best and worst of Cameron Crowe’s films, it quickly became obvious: his best films are the ones that came from Crowe’s first-hand experiences. They stories are cleaner, shorter and more to the point, where his adaptation and inspiration films tend toward a bloat of material that them lacking qualities of substance and endurance.
If that premise holds true, then there is hope for Crowe’s latest film, Aloha, which opens this weekend. The relationships in this film seem inspired by his divorce from Nancy Wilson of Heart and their explorations of love with other people after that major relationship.
Whether Aloha becomes a Crowe classic or not, its opening marks a perfect time to revisit the greatest hits of his film career (and avoid the rest). Below we break down the unmissable along with the entirely avoidable.
