Omar Sharif, ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and ‘Dr. Zhivago’ Star, Dead at 83

Omar Sharif, the Egyptian actor who is best known for roles in Dr. Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia and more, has died. He was 83.

Variety reports that Sharif, best known for playing Yuri in Dr. Zhivago and Sherif Ali in Lawrence of Arabia, passed away today (July 10) of a heart attack at a hospital in Cairo.

This past May, it was announced that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Sharif was nominated for an Oscar for his work in Dr. Zhivago. He also played parts in Funny Girl and played Che Guevara in a 1969 biopic called Che!

He worked in international cinema and television up to his death, including U.S. appearances such as 2004’s Hidalgo with Viggo Mortensen,  ABC’s 2006 Ten Commandments miniseries and NBC’s 2009 The Last Templar miniseries.

He is survived by his son and two grandsons, including Omar Sharif, Jr., an actor.
